Wizards of the Coast To Take Over D&D PC Gaming

Larian Bows Out, Hasbro Swoops In

WotC have decided that maybe there is something to this whole D&D computer game market and are looking to get in on the profits after the stellar success of Baldurs Gate 3.  Hasbro and WotC  are tossing over $1 billion to the four video game studios that Hasbro owns to start development of D&D games on the PC.  It might not be Baldurs Gate 4, but it will at least be based on the gaming system.  Then again, Hasbro and WotC have a history of cancelling games, so we might only get some screenshots before hearing bad news.

The modding community should be aware that WotC attempted to shift from the popular version of their Open Game License which allowed you to create your own scenarios without having to pay them for the privileged.  The huge outcry lead to them abandoning it in favour of the new System Reference Document 5.1 which restored many of the rights removed in OGL 1.1.  While that was well received, it didn’t stop them from sending the Pinkerton agency after a YouTuber that was accidentally sent some unreleased products.

The chances of them attempting something similar with those trying to mod these games, assuming they are ever released, is definitely not zero.

We will be happy to hear your thoughts
