Made By Mitchell’s New Curve Case Palette Has the Darkest Contour Shade We’ve Ever Seen

Not all superheroes wear capes; some just create makeup for dark skin tones that isn’t jet black. Although people with darker skin still struggle to find complexion products that match their skin, U.K. brand Made by Mitchell has stepped in to prove that making those products is, indeed, possible. BeautyTok already loved the makeup brand for its pigmented formulas and inclusive shade ranges, but the latest launch only further proves the brand’s commitment to diversity. The Curve Case cream color palette in the shade Deeper Than Deep has the darkest contour shade we’ve ever seen—and people are pumped. As of press time, the brand’s TikTok video announcing the palette has 1.1 million views and 78.5K likes, plus 402 comments, the majority of which are applauding the brand for its innovation.

This dark-skin-friendly product is especially buzzy given the current conversation on inclusivity in makeup. In case you missed it, popular beauty creator Golloria (whose niche is reviewing makeup brands’ darkest complexion shades) recently called out Youthforia for creating a foundation shade that is, in Golloria’s words, “tar in a bottle.” (The brand has not released an official response to this new wave of criticism.)

In 2023, Youthforia launched its Date Night Foundation with 15 shades and, after criticism that the range wasn’t inclusive, launched 10 more shades in March 2024. The consensus online was that the new shades still lack diversity in undertones and the darkest shade isn’t even wearable, with cosmetic chemists like Esther Olu noting that the foundation’s, er, unique shade was likely due to the fact that it only contained white and black pigment rather than the mix of those plus reds and yellows that create the undertones that most foundations have.

While all that was brewing on people’s FYP, Made by Mitchell (founded by U.K.-based makeup artist Mitchell Halliday) dropped Curve Case. While there was no reference to Youthforia in any of Made by Mitchell’s content, the product certainly proves that it is possible to create base products for the darkest complexions—which, as a reminder, are shades of brown, not pure black.
